3 steps to a rewarding career in childcare in Britain
If you have a genuine interest in children and childcare but you are not sure how to plan for it, we have a 3 step program to really make it work for you. With our plan you can double your pay year on year whilst truly enjoying your work with children!
Step 1 – Year 1 au pair 25 hours £55+ p/w earn & learn
Au pair in Britain As an au pair in Britain you get a change to ‘earn & learn’. You will be paid £55-£60 per week for 25 hours of childcare and some light housework, leaving you plenty of time to learn. If you English is moderate, focus on regular language classes first. As soon as your language skills are strong enough you enroll into the Au Pair Apprenticeship program. This gives you an NVQ2 and BTEC2 in childcare, pediatric First Aid and an English language certificate all rolled into one package, a valuable combination of internationally recognized qualifications. Depending on your (language) skills this may take 12-18 months.
Step 2 – Year 2 Mother’s help 40 hours £110+ p/w
Mother’s help in Britain With your childcare qualifications, experience and English skills you can now move into a Mother’s help position. After the first your you are fine to work more hours as you are no longer restricted by your initial Accession card. A mother’s help position is often for approx. 40 hours per week and can earn £110 - £150 (net) for a newly qualified. You will continue to be on full board and be treated as a member of the family. We recommend you continue to follow further courses in childcare, such as the NVQ3.
Step 3 – Year 3 Nanny 40 hours £220+ p/w
Nanny in Britain With qualifications and 2 years experience, why not let us help you find a nanny job. You can live in or live out and expect to be paid anything from £220 - £400 per week depending on your age, relevant experience (age group) and qualifications.
Always make sure you get good references and try to work with different age groups. It pays especially to gain experience with newborn baby’s, either as an au pair with the help from the host mum or later on once you feel more confident.
As a nanny you can continue to progress, maybe you want to qualify as maternity nurse. Some families take their nannies with them on exotic holidays! A good nanny is a very valued member of the family-team and many nannies stay with the same family for years!
